Compost Bins Built and Crowns Rescued

Today I built the compost bins with the pallets and some industrial-strength zip ties — so much easier than trying to nail them all together.

I also dug through the big clumps Colleen left for us to rescue as many asparagus crowns and strawberry plants as I could from the Bermuda and the mint. It was a bit of a scavenger hunt!

We have some massive asparagus crowns. It was interesting to see how they got stuck into the clay soil below the top soil and all the amendments we had added. We have streaks of clay and sandy soil on our property and lots of milky quartz.

After cleaning it all out, I had a good bit of nice soil left so, naturally, I created another little bed next to the compost bins and replanted the rescued strawberries. They looked pretty pitiful, and I don’t expect a lot, but hopefully some of them will perk back up.
